Complete Communities are The Key
Elson supports complete communities — places where the basic needs of residents are available within the immediate vicinity. Where one does not have to drive two miles to the nearest supermarket just to buy some milk and eggs, or doesn’t have to drive there in the first place.
The District is home to over a dozen distinct communities, and each deserve to retain their neighborhood charm, especially within residential areas. Commercial corridors deserve to be continuous, accessible, walkable and free of “dead zones” that discourage walking and local patronage. “Vulnerable spaces” need to be redesigned to be more resistant to blight.
Development should be more balanced. Hollywood is being heavily developed while Historic Filipinotown is experiencing very little development.
